This dam complex powers my town & others around us, flooding the local grid with renewable hydropower from a series of turbines above and below this spot on the Deerfield River in western Massachusetts. Looks impressive during spring melt, and easier now to forget its Indigenous and natural history. Truth is that these dams stopped plentiful runs of shad and some salmon too, for which it got named Salmon Falls, before colonization it was the site of a treaty between the Mohawk and Penobscot peoples, allowing members of both tribes who lived within a day’s walk to hunt and fish here in peace, such was the resource.
